Science and Human Behavior, Chapter 9: Deprivation and Satiation, Quote 2

Science and Human Behavior“In the search for what is happening “in emotion” the scientist has found himself at a peculiar disadvantage. Where the layman identifies and classifies emotions not only with ease but with considerable consistency, the scientist in focusing upon responses of glands and smooth muscles and upon expressive behavior has not been sure that he could tell the difference between even such relatively gross emotions as anger and fear. Some means of identification available to the layman appears to have been overlooked.” (p. 161)
