“In both [geophysics and the experimental analysis of behavior], principles derived from research conducted under the favorable conditions of the laboratory are used to give a plausible account of facts which are not at the moment under experimental control. Neither account can at the present time be proved, but both are to be preferred to treatments which lack the same kind of experimental support. (p. 100)
