“It is not for nothing that psychoanalysis is called “depth psychology” or that linguists look for the “deep structure” of a sentence. And it is perhaps inevitable that an analysis of the same behavior in terms of contingencies of reinforcement will seem superficial. But those who believe they are looking into the depths usually try to bring things to the surface, and we can reach the surface most readily by starting there.” (279-280)
