In addition to the usual factors affecting the listener’s behavior (such as clarity of the verbal stimulus or the extent of conditioning of separate responses), successful instruction is subject to several conditions. One of these is the “prestige” of the speaker or the listener’s “belief” in what he says. The listener reacts to the behavior of a given speaker to an extent determined by the consequences of past reactions. (p. 365)
