A preliminary restriction would be to limit the term verbal to instances in which the responses of the “listener” have been conditioned . . . If we make the further provision that the “listener” must be responding in ways which have been conditioned precisely in order to reinforce the behavior of the speaker, we narrow our subject to what is traditionally recognized as the verbal field.
